Dulwich Picture Gallery

John Soane · London, United Kingdom · 1817

Soane's compact gallery uses carefully controlled top lighting to illuminate paintings while limiting direct glare. A sequence of linked rooms and the founders' mausoleum give the building an unusually concentrated architectural character. It became an important model for the design of purpose-built public art galleries.
