Žižkov Television Tower
Václav Aulický + Jiří Kozák · Prague, Czechia · 1992
The Žižkov Television Tower rises from three cylindrical concrete shafts connected by elevated pods containing technical spaces, observation decks and a restaurant. Its futuristic profile differs sharply from Prague’s historic skyline and made the building controversial from construction onward. The tower was designed by architect Václav Aulický with structural engineer Jiří Kozák and completed in the early 1990s after a long construction period. Later additions of David Černý’s crawling baby sculptures further transformed its public image. Architecturally, it is a striking example of late socialist high-tech infrastructure meeting postmodern urban identity.
