Yves Saint Laurent Museum Marrakech

Studio KO · Marrakech, Morocco · 2017

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum Marrakech is a refined contemporary museum that connects fashion, craft, and Moroccan architectural atmosphere. Designed by Studio KO near the Majorelle Garden, the building uses brick, terrazzo, stone, and carefully controlled light to create a textured environment for exhibitions, archives, auditorium spaces, and cultural programming. Its facade is especially significant: brickwork is arranged to evoke woven fabric, translating the language of textiles into architectural surface. The project is important because it avoids generic white-box museum design and instead develops a material identity tied to Marrakech’s color, craft, and climate. Interior spaces are controlled and intimate, while courtyards and circulation elements maintain a connection to local spatial traditions. For ArchiAtlas, the museum belongs among Africa’s important contemporary projects because it shows how a relatively small cultural institution can achieve architectural depth through material detail, urban placement, and a precise relationship between content and form. It should be reviewed on site as architecture, urban artifact, and cultural evidence rather than as a tourist attraction alone, because its importance comes from the relationship between form, use, construction, memory, and public life.
