Yoyogi Hachiman Toilet
Toyo Ito · Tokyo, Japan · 2021
Yoyogi Hachiman Toilet, designed by Toyo Ito, introduces an organic architectural language into the dense urban fabric near Yoyogi-Hachiman. The project has often been described through its mushroom-like forms, which create a softer and more natural presence than a conventional public restroom. Instead of reading as a single rigid service box, the building is composed as a small cluster of rounded elements, giving users a sense of approachability and spatial distinction. This design strategy reflects Ito’s long-standing interest in fluidity, nature, and human experience within the city. As part of THE TOKYO TOILET initiative, the project shows how public infrastructure can be expressive, inclusive, and memorable while still performing a highly practical function. It contributes to Shibuya’s public realm as both amenity and small urban landmark.
