Yoyogi Fukamachi Mini Park Toilet

Shigeru Ban · Tokyo, Japan · 2020

Yoyogi Fukamachi Park Toilet, designed by Shigeru Ban, uses the same smart-glass concept that made his contribution to THE TOKYO TOILET internationally famous. The colored transparent walls allow passersby to see that the restroom is clean and unoccupied; once locked, the glass turns opaque to provide privacy. This simple but powerful mechanism responds directly to common public concerns around sanitation and safety. The project demonstrates how technology, color, and architectural clarity can reshape the experience of an everyday public facility. Set within a small park in Tomigaya, the building is more than a service structure: it becomes a visual landmark and a public conversation piece. Its success lies in making trust visible, transforming a hidden urban necessity into a transparent and carefully designed civic object.
