Yokohama Museum of Art

Kenzo Tange Associates · Yokohama, Japan · 1989

Kenzo Tange organizes the museum around a vast symmetrical grand gallery that acts as both civic interior and distribution space. Heavy stone cladding, monumental columns and a long horizontal facade establish a formal urban edge facing the Minato Mirai district. The recently renewed institution is a useful late-career comparison with Tange's earlier concrete modernism, showing a shift toward more monumental postmodern civic representation.
