Xiangshan Campus, China Academy of Art
Wang Shu + Lu Wenyu / Amateur Architecture Studio · Hangzhou, China · 2007
The Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art is conceived as a loose settlement of courtyards, bridges, walls and tiled roofs embedded within a hilly landscape. Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu combine contemporary concrete structure with reclaimed roof tiles, masonry and spatial ideas drawn from Chinese gardens and vernacular settlements. Buildings vary in form rather than following a single institutional template, allowing movement through the campus to become a sequence of framed views and outdoor rooms. Developed in two main phases, the campus is an important example of contemporary Chinese architecture resisting standardized university planning.
