Wrest Point Hotel Casino
Roy Grounds · Hobart, Australia · 1973
Wrest Point’s 1973 tower gave Hobart a new modern skyline landmark and housed Australia’s first legal casino. Roy Grounds designed the circular high-rise with a revolving upper-level restaurant, using a compact central core and repetitive perimeter glazing to maximize panoramic views over the Derwent River and Mount Wellington. The tower rises from an older hotel complex and became a conspicuous symbol of Tasmania’s tourism ambitions in the 1970s. Its simple cylindrical geometry remains one of Hobart’s most recognizable examples of late modern commercial architecture.
