Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan

Mongolian and Chinese court craftsmen · Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia · 1905

The Winter Palace is the principal European-influenced residential building within the larger Green Palace complex of Mongolia’s Bogd Khan. The two-story white palace stands among older temple structures and combines imported classical imagery with a court precinct rooted in Mongolian Buddhist culture. Built in 1905, it later became part of a museum preserving furnishings, clothing and objects associated with the final Bogd Khan. The contrast between the palace and surrounding timber temple buildings makes the site especially valuable for understanding the architectural hybridity of Mongolia at the turn of the twentieth century.
