White Mosque Nazareth

Unknown · Nazareth, Israel · 1808

The White Mosque, or Al-Abiad Mosque, is Nazareth's oldest standing mosque, completed in 1808. Commissioned by Ottoman ruler Suleiman Pasha and built by Sheikh Abdullah al-Fahoum, its distinctive white stone façade and green dome and minaret are prominent features of the city's skyline. The mosque's courtyard, surrounded by arcades, reflects traditional Islamic architectural principles. The mosque serves as a significant religious and community center for Nazareth's Muslim population. Its construction marked a period of relative peace and prosperity under Ottoman rule, contributing to the city's diverse religious landscape. The design, while modest, embodies local interpretations of Ottoman-era religious architecture.
