Wedding Palace, Ashgabat

Polimeks · Ashgabat, Turkmenistan · 2011

Ashgabat’s Wedding Palace is a civil registry and ceremonial complex shaped as three stacked star-like tiers supporting a large faceted globe. Polimeks used white marble, gilded decoration and strongly symmetrical planning to create a building that is immediately legible within the capital’s monumental landscape. Wedding halls, reception spaces and related services are distributed through the lower volumes, while the globe forms the project’s principal symbolic image. Completed in 2011, the building is a striking example of contemporary Turkmen state architecture in which everyday civic functions are housed within highly ceremonial forms.
