Wat Suthat

Royal court artisans under Kings Rama I–III · Bangkok, Thailand · 1847

Wat Suthat is one of Bangkok's principal royal temples and anchors the civic space of the Giant Swing. Begun under Rama I and completed under Rama III, the monastery is organized around a monumental ordination hall with broad roof planes, deep eaves and a surrounding terrace of columns. Murals, carved doors and a large bronze Buddha connect the building's ceremonial role to the cultural ambitions of the early capital. The open forecourt and axial relationship to the swing give the temple an urban presence different from the more enclosed palace compounds nearby. The completion date records the end of a multi-reign construction campaign, while later maintenance has preserved the complex as an active religious institution.
