Wat Rong Suea Ten

Putha Kabkaew · Chiang Rai, Thailand · 2016

Wat Rong Suea Ten, or the Blue Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist complex defined by saturated cobalt surfaces, gold ornament and a highly sculptural roofline. Designer Putha Kabkaew, who trained with the team at Wat Rong Khun, works within the exuberant visual culture of contemporary Chiang Rai while developing a distinct palette and atmosphere. Guardian figures frame the entrance, and the main hall's blue interior surrounds a large white Buddha with murals that extend architecture into painted cosmology. The temple demonstrates how active religious building in northern Thailand can combine traditional iconographic systems, new materials and tourist visibility. Its compact scale makes the relationship between exterior color, interior light and ornament especially immediate.
