Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Unknown; Lanna royal and monastic workshops · Chiang Mai, Thailand · 1383
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep occupies a mountain terrace high above Chiang Mai and is one of northern Thailand's most important pilgrimage sites. A long naga stair and later road lead to a compact upper court centered on a gilded chedi associated with a sacred relic. Cloisters, bells, shrines and layered roofs compress around the brilliant central form, while terraces open to distant views over the city plain. The monastery has grown through many phases since its fourteenth-century foundation, and its present appearance reflects repeated patronage and restoration. Architecture, topography and ritual journey are inseparable here: the ascent from forested slope to radiant enclosure is the defining spatial experience.
