Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan

Unknown; regional royal and monastic workshops · Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand · 1300

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is the principal Buddhist monument of Nakhon Si Thammarat and a major pilgrimage center of southern Thailand. Its tall bell-shaped stupa, traditionally associated with relics of the Buddha, reflects Sri Lankan Theravada connections and anchors a dense active monastery. Surrounding galleries, chapels, image halls and smaller stupas record centuries of patronage, repair and ritual use. The brilliant white main chedi and gold finial dominate the historic city, while the interior courts reveal a more layered collection of regional art and architecture. The listed year is an approximate thirteenth-century anchor rather than a precise completion date for a complex that has been repeatedly rebuilt and enlarged.
