Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew

Local monastic and community builders · Sisaket, Thailand · 1984

Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew is commonly called the Million Bottle Temple because discarded glass bottles form much of its visible fabric. Monks and local residents began collecting green and brown bottles in the 1980s, using them as infill, surface pattern and light-filtering material across a growing compound of halls, chedis and smaller structures. Bottle caps are also assembled into mosaics and details. The project combines recycling, community labor and religious building in a direct, memorable way, while the repeated glass modules create unexpected color and texture. It is less a single architect-designed object than a sustained collective construction practice. The rural location makes it a more deliberate journey than Thailand's major urban temples.
