Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai

Unknown; Sukhothai royal workshop · Sukhothai, Thailand · 1300

Wat Mahathat was the principal temple of the Sukhothai capital and remains the spatial center of its historical park. A lotus-bud chedi rises within a dense ceremonial ensemble of subsidiary towers, columned halls, moats and large Buddha images. The composition demonstrates the mature Sukhothai synthesis of local, Khmer and Sri Lankan Buddhist traditions, with strong axial order softened by water and landscape. Seen at dawn or dusk, isolated masonry and sculpture recover something of the former city's monumental scale. The date is deliberately approximate: construction and enlargement occurred across the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This record therefore represents the historic core of the complex rather than a single precisely dated building campaign.
