Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya

Unknown; royal workshop of the Ayutthaya Kingdom · Ayutthaya, Thailand · 1374

Wat Mahathat stood at the ritual center of Ayutthaya beside the former royal palace. Its principal prang, chedis, cloisters and monastic halls formed one of the capital's most important Buddhist ensembles, housing relics and serving royal ceremonies. Today the complex survives as a field of brick ruins, where fragments of stucco and the famous Buddha head held by tree roots reveal both destruction and long natural transformation. The site is best understood through its urban role within the larger historic city rather than as an isolated picturesque ruin. The traditional founding date is used here, but the complex developed through multiple construction phases and suffered repeated collapse and restoration.
