Wat Benchamabophit

Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong · Bangkok, Thailand · 1911

Known as the Marble Temple, Wat Benchamabophit translates a canonical Thai monastic composition into the material culture of turn-of-the-century royal modernization. Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong designed the principal hall with Carrara marble cladding, precise symmetrical elevations and a layered orange roof, while retaining traditional gilded gables and ceremonial thresholds. A cloister around the rear courtyard displays a major collection of Buddha images in varied regional styles. The result is neither a European building in Thai dress nor a simple revival, but a carefully controlled synthesis that reflects Bangkok's cosmopolitan court. The completion year refers to the principal early-twentieth-century campaign; the temple remains active and well maintained.
