Wadi Rum Visitor Center

Ammar Khammash · Wadi Rum, Jordan · 2002

Ammar Khammash’s visitor center sits at the threshold of Wadi Rum as a low stone complex aligned with the desert landscape rather than as an object competing with it. Local sandstone walls, shaded courtyards and controlled openings create a restrained environmental response while framing views toward the sandstone mountains beyond. The building organizes ticketing, information and visitor services for the protected area without relying on a highly technological or symbolic language. Completed in the early 2000s, it is a strong example of contemporary Jordanian architecture shaped by geology, climate and landscape.
