Vitebsky Railway Station

Stanislaw Brzozowski + Sima Minash · Saint Petersburg, Russia · 1904

The present Vitebsky Railway Station is one of Russia’s finest early twentieth-century transport buildings. Stanislaw Brzozowski and Sima Minash combined an expressive Art Nouveau façade with a large iron-and-glass train shed, ceremonial staircases and richly detailed passenger interiors. The building makes movement through the station theatrical, from the corner tower and entrance halls to the elevated platforms. Completed in 1904 on the site of Russia’s earliest railway terminus, it demonstrates how new transport infrastructure was given both technological expression and metropolitan grandeur.
