Villa Stenersen

Arne Korsmo · Oslo, Norway · 1939

Arne Korsmo’s Villa Stenersen is one of Norway’s most important examples of International Style residential architecture. Completed in 1939 for financier and art collector Rolf Stenersen, the house uses white planar volumes, broad glazing and an open interior to support both domestic life and the display of modern art. Its careful proportions and custom details demonstrate Korsmo’s synthesis of European functionalism with Norwegian design culture. Now preserved as a significant modern monument, the villa provides a rare intact view of interwar Norwegian avant-garde domestic architecture.
