Villa Rufolo

Unknown · Ravello, Italy · 1270

Villa Rufolo is one of Ravello’s most important architectural and landscape ensembles. Built by a wealthy medieval merchant family, the villa combines towers, courtyards, cloisters, gardens, and panoramic terraces above the Amalfi Coast. Its architecture is valuable because it links domestic prestige, mercantile wealth, and Mediterranean visual culture in a setting where landscape is never secondary. The sequence from urban entrance to garden edge creates a gradual unfolding of enclosed and open spaces, culminating in expansive views over the sea. The villa later became associated with cultural tourism and music, especially through the Ravello Festival. It remains a key example of architecture as a frame for landscape and memory.
