Villa Medici at Fiesole
Michelozzo (traditional attribution) · Fiesole, Italy · 1457
Villa Medici at Fiesole is an early Renaissance country house set on terraces above Florence. Rather than imitating a fortified rural castle, the compact rectangular building opens through loggias and gardens to long views, joining residence, cultivated landscape and intellectual retreat. The layered terraces, walls, planting and framed prospects are as important as the villa itself. Traditionally attributed to Michelozzo for Giovanni de' Medici, the house helped establish a model for later humanist villas around Florence. The date is an approximate completion point, and both authorship and phases deserve careful treatment. Access is limited because the property is not a conventional public museum.
