Villa Mairea
Alvar Aalto + Aino Aalto · Noormarkku, Finland · 1939
Villa Mairea is one of Aino and Alvar Aalto’s most influential houses, designed for Maire and Harry Gullichsen and completed in 1939. The residence combines a free modern plan with references to Finnish forests, vernacular construction and Japanese spatial ideas. Columns, screens and changing materials dissolve strict distinctions between natural and manufactured elements, while the L-shaped plan embraces a sheltered garden and pool. The house is a key statement of Aalto’s mature humanist modernism, balancing experimentation with an unusually relaxed domestic atmosphere.
