Villa Lysis
Édouard Chimot · Capri, Italy · 1905
Villa Lysis is a highly expressive early twentieth-century villa built for Baron Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen on Capri. Its architecture combines neoclassical, Symbolist, and Art Nouveau references into a theatrical house of retreat, performance, and self-invention. The villa’s portico, staircases, terraces, and sea-facing rooms are designed as much for atmosphere as for domestic function. Its position near Villa Jovis adds a provocative dialogue between modern decadence and Roman imperial memory. Today, as a cultural site, Villa Lysis offers a complex architectural reading: beauty, exile, scandal, landscape, and personal mythology are all embedded in its spatial composition. It is one of Capri’s most distinctive villa landmarks.
