Villa Jovis
Roman imperial architects · Capri, Italy · 27
Villa Jovis is one of the most important Roman imperial sites on Capri, associated with Emperor Tiberius. Positioned on a high eastern promontory, the villa combines residence, administration, water storage, and defensive topography into a powerful architectural complex. Although surviving as archaeological remains, it should be understood as built architecture rather than a picturesque ruin: its retaining walls, cisterns, terraces, and organized rooms reveal a sophisticated response to terrain and isolation. The site also demonstrates how imperial power used height, view, and difficulty of access as architectural tools. For visitors, Villa Jovis is valuable because it connects Roman construction to landscape domination and the mythology of Capri.
