Villa Gamberaia

Unknown; Martino Porcinai and Luigi Messeri (garden interventions) · Settignano, Italy · 1718

The villa and terraced garden demonstrate how architecture, clipped vegetation, water and long framed views can be composed as a single spatial sequence on the Florentine hills. The celebrated parterre and water garden are particularly valuable for understanding the landscape tradition that shaped later Anglo-American interpretations of the Italian garden.
