Vienna City Hall
Friedrich von Schmidt · Vienna, Austria · 1883
Friedrich von Schmidt designed Vienna’s municipal headquarters around courtyards and a prominent central tower. Its Gothic Revival language gives the civic building a strong public identity on the Ringstrasse, with the square in front extending its role into the city’s ceremonial life. Visiting: The facade and the arcaded courtyards can be seen from Rathausplatz, which hosts markets and festivals for much of the year. Guided tours of the state rooms run on set days; check the City of Vienna website for dates.
