Viana do Castelo Municipal Library
Álvaro Siza Vieira · Viana do Castelo, Portugal · 2008
Viana do Castelo's municipal library places a public learning institution beside the River Lima. Álvaro Siza completed the building in 2008, using a broad elevated volume and a carefully shaped ground-level approach to establish a relationship with the waterfront. The contrast between the apparent simplicity of the exterior and the more varied sequence of interior spaces is characteristic of the project. Its position also makes the library part of a wider civic landscape of promenades and open space. The building is best understood through the movement from the river edge into its quieter reading environment. Visiting: Public library access is normally free during opening hours. Reading areas remain working library spaces.
