Vancouver Public Library Central Branch
Moshe Safdie & Associates + Downs/Archambault · Vancouver, Canada · 1995
Moshe Safdie’s Vancouver Central Library places a rectangular library block inside a curved elliptical wall, creating a dramatic glazed public concourse between the two forms. Bridges connect reading floors across this atrium-like space, turning circulation and informal gathering into central components of the library experience. The exterior alludes loosely to monumental historical precedents while the interior operates as a highly contemporary civic marketplace. Opened in 1995, the building became an important downtown public anchor and a recognizable part of Vancouver’s urban identity.
