Urban Rigger

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2016

Urban Rigger is a floating student-housing prototype located in Copenhagen’s harbor environment. Built from stacked shipping containers around a sheltered central water court, the project explores how unused harbor basins can support compact, affordable, and mobile housing. Its units are arranged to create shared outdoor space, direct contact with the water, and a recognizable modular identity. While small in scale compared with many BIG projects, Urban Rigger is conceptually important because it connects housing shortages, industrial reuse, and marine urbanism. It is also a useful precedent for thinking about future city expansion without conventional land consumption, especially in waterfront cities facing pressure from growth and climate change.
