Urasando Toilet
Marc Newson · Tokyo, Japan · 2023
Urasando Toilet, designed by Marc Newson, brings references to traditional Japanese architecture into the scale of a contemporary public amenity. The design evokes the language of temples or tea houses through its roof form, proportions, and crafted material presence, while still functioning as durable urban infrastructure. In the context of THE TOKYO TOILET project, this work stands out for its balance between familiarity and refinement. Rather than treating the restroom as a purely technical object, Newson frames it as a small civic building with cultural resonance. Its compact volume gives dignity to a routine public function, demonstrating how references to tradition can be reinterpreted without nostalgia. The result is a calm, carefully detailed structure that contributes to the identity of the street and to the broader network of architect-designed toilets in Shibuya.
