Uralmash Palace of Culture

Valery Paramonov + Moisei Reischer + Bela Scheffler · Yekaterinburg, Russia · 1935

The building now known as the Uralmash Palace of Culture began as an ambitious factory-kitchen and club project for the planned Uralmash industrial settlement. Paramonov, Reischer and Scheffler developed a large constructivist composition with curving and rectilinear volumes organized around collective services rather than private domestic life. As the district’s needs changed, the program shifted toward cultural and club functions. Completed in the mid-1930s, the building is a major component of Uralmash’s unusually rich constructivist urban ensemble and demonstrates how architecture was used to support the social infrastructure of the socialist factory city.
