University of Iceland Main Building
Guðjón Samúelsson · Reykjavík, Iceland · 1940
The University of Iceland’s Main Building marked the institution’s move to a dedicated campus and was consecrated in 1940. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the building has a formal, symmetrical composition centered on a projecting entrance and ceremonial hall. Its restrained stone-colored surfaces and simplified classical ordering illustrate the architect’s transition toward a more modern institutional language while maintaining civic gravity. The building remains the symbolic center of the university and an important piece of Reykjavík’s twentieth-century educational and state-building architecture.
