UNAM Central Library

Juan O’Gorman + Gustavo Saavedra + Juan Martínez de Velasco · Mexico City, Mexico · 1954

The Central Library is one of the visual anchors of UNAM’s Ciudad Universitaria. A large windowless book-stack volume is wrapped on four sides by Juan O’Gorman’s enormous stone mosaic, turning the architecture into a narrative surface about Mexican history, culture and the university. A lower transparent reading base contrasts with the monumental mural block above. The building was constructed between 1950 and 1954 and opened in 1956; its integration of modern planning, volcanic stone and public art is central to the UNESCO-listed campus.
