Turning Torso

Santiago Calatrava · Malmö, Sweden · 2005

The Turning Torso is a neo-futurist skyscraper in Malmö, Sweden, completed in 2005. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it stands as a prominent example of deconstructivist architecture. Its distinctive form, characterized by nine rotating segments, spirals 90 degrees from base to pinnacle, making it the tallest building in Scandinavia at the time of its completion. This residential tower is structured around a central concrete core, with each segmented block cantilevered off this core. The twisting design is visually striking and was inspired by a sculpture of a human torso by Calatrava himself. It has become a recognizable landmark for Malmö and a symbol of modern Swedish architectural innovation.
