Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque

Bouygues Turkmen project team · Ashgabat, Turkmenistan · 2004

Türkmenbaşy Ruhy Mosque is a monumental marble-clad mosque and mausoleum complex built in Gypjak, west of central Ashgabat. Four tall minarets frame a large domed prayer hall designed for thousands of worshippers, while the surrounding precinct includes the mausoleum of Saparmurat Niyazov and his family. The scale, white marble and axial landscape are characteristic of Turkmenistan’s post-independence state architecture. Opened in 2004, the complex combines religious use, presidential memorialization and national symbolism in one of the country’s largest contemporary architectural projects.
