Tower of David Museum

Unknown · Jerusalem, Israel

The Tower of David Museum occupies Jerusalem's historic Citadel at Jaffa Gate, a complex built and rebuilt over many centuries rather than a structure with a single completion date. The site preserves Hasmonean and Herodian fortifications, an Early Muslim citadel, Crusader expansion, extensive Mamluk construction that established much of the present complex, and major Ottoman additions including the monumental gate, mosque, cannon yard, and minaret known today as the Tower of David. The British later adapted rooms for exhibitions, and the Tower of David Museum opened in 1989. Its architectural significance lies precisely in this layered fabric: the museum is an adaptive reuse of a military complex whose surviving spaces form a palimpsest of Jerusalem's history.
