Torres Blancas

Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza · Madrid, Spain · 1969

Torres Blancas explores an organic alternative to the conventional rectangular apartment tower. Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza brought cylindrical forms, curved balconies and substantial concrete elements into a building whose silhouette suggests a cluster of branching volumes. Completed in 1969, it combines a strong structural image with varied dwelling layouts and elevated communal spaces. The plural name reflects an earlier proposal for two towers, although only one was realized. Viewed from the surrounding streets, the changing depth of its balconies explains how the façade mediates between private domestic space and Madrid's larger infrastructure. Visiting: Private apartments. Observe from public streets, with no public interior ticket.
