Torre Guinigi

Guinigi family workshop · Lucca, Italy · 1384

Torre Guinigi is the best-known surviving private tower in Lucca and is distinguished by the holm oaks growing from its rooftop garden. Built as part of the Guinigi family's palace complex, the brick shaft rises above the dense medieval street pattern and once participated in a much larger field of domestic towers. The planted summit transforms a defensive and status symbol into a memorable piece of inhabited skyline. Climbing the internal stairs reveals the changing relationship between narrow masonry enclosure, timber structure and panoramic terrace. The construction date is approximate, and public access requires a substantial stair ascent.
