Torre Bellesguard
Antoni Gaudí · Barcelona, Spain · 1909
Torre Bellesguard combines Gaudí's Modernisme with references to the medieval royal residence that once occupied this hillside site. Its slender tower, crenellations and pointed forms initially suggest a Gothic manor, but the building's geometry, brickwork and carefully placed openings belong to Gaudí's own experimentation. Constructed between 1900 and 1909, it uses local stone to maintain a close relationship with its terrain. The surrounding garden also helps explain the site's older history. Look for the shift from the relatively austere exterior to the more inventive spatial and structural details inside. Visiting: Opening and tour arrangements should be checked with the house.
