Toronto-Dominion Centre
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe + John B. Parkin Associates + Bregman & Hamann · Toronto, Canada · 1967
The Toronto-Dominion Centre brought Mies van der Rohe’s disciplined steel-and-glass urbanism to the heart of Toronto. Dark bronze-black towers are placed around a granite plaza with a low banking pavilion, creating carefully calibrated relationships between solids, voids and pedestrian space. The first major phase opened in 1967, with later towers extending the ensemble. Its rigorous detailing, proportion and open ground plane made the complex one of Canada’s most influential corporate developments and a defining element of Toronto’s modern financial district.
