Toledo Metro Station

Oscar Tusquets Blanca · Naples, Italy · 2012

Toledo Metro Station is one of the strongest examples of Naples’ Art Stations program, where public transport infrastructure is treated as civic and artistic architecture. Designed by Oscar Tusquets Blanca, the station transforms the descent underground into a spatial narrative of light, water, and geology. Its escalators, mosaics, blue surfaces, and large light well create a sequence that is far more experiential than a conventional metro stop. Architecturally, Toledo is important because it shows how infrastructure can become a destination in itself, expanding the definition of public architecture. It also adds a contemporary layer to Via Toledo, one of Naples’ most important historic commercial streets.
