Tokyu Plaza Ginza
Nikken Sekkei · Tokyo, Japan · 2016
Tokyu Plaza Ginza is a major retail complex by Nikken Sekkei, positioned at the edge of Ginza near Yurakucho. Its architectural identity is built around the concept of a “vessel of light,” expressed through a folded glass façade that catches reflections from the surrounding streets. The building uses commercial spectacle in a controlled and elegant way: the faceted envelope gives depth to a typical shopping-center program and turns the exterior into a changing urban surface. Inside, retail, dining and terraces support longer visits rather than quick shopping stops. For an architectural route through Ginza, Tokyu Plaza is valuable because it demonstrates how contemporary commercial architecture can use glass, geometry and lighting to produce a memorable public image.
