Tokyo Skytree

Nikken Sekkei · Tokyo, Japan · 2012

The Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. Completed in 2012, its design by Nikken Sekkei integrates traditional Japanese aesthetic principles with contemporary engineering. The tower's form, a "sori" (curvature) and "mukuri" (bulge), draws inspiration from the curvature of traditional Japanese temples and is optimized for seismic resistance. Rising to 634 meters, it is the world's tallest tower and the second tallest structure. The Skytree features two observation decks and utilizes a central concrete core with a steel frame, a system designed to absorb vibrations. Its distinctive lattice structure and lighting schemes, developed by lighting designer Hirohito Totsune, contribute to its nighttime presence in the city skyline.
