Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium

Fumihiko Maki · Tokyo, Japan · 1990

Fumihiko Maki's rebuilding of the metropolitan gymnasium is composed as a cluster of broad roof forms rather than a single arena box. The sweeping main roof and smaller volumes step down toward Sendagaya, mediating between large-event infrastructure and the surrounding city. The exterior circulation and landscaped terraces are particularly useful for reading Maki's interest in collective form and the assembly of multiple public elements.
