Tirpitz Museum

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) · Blåvand, Denmark · 2017

Tirpitz Museum is an underground museum complex inserted into the dunes near a former World War II bunker on Denmark’s west coast. BIG’s design avoids competing with the heavy concrete bunker by cutting precise paths into the landscape and placing exhibition spaces below the surface. Four incisions converge around a central courtyard, allowing visitors to move between military history, local culture, and the dramatic coastal terrain. The project is especially powerful because it uses absence, excavation, and topography rather than iconic object-making. From above, the museum almost disappears into the dunes; from within, it frames the bunker and landscape as active parts of the exhibition experience.
