Tikal Temple I
Maya builders under Jasaw Chan K’awiil I · Tikal, Guatemala · 734
Temple I dominates the eastern side of Tikal’s Great Plaza as a steep stepped funerary pyramid crowned by a small temple sanctuary and tall roof comb. Built during the Late Classic Maya period, its vertical profile creates a deliberate contrast with the broad plaza and neighboring acropolis structures. The monument demonstrates how architecture, burial, dynastic representation and controlled procession were combined within Tikal’s ceremonial core. Its extraordinary silhouette has become one of the defining images of Classic Maya architecture.
