The Broad

Diller Scofidio + Renfro + Gensler · Los Angeles, United States · 2015

The Broad wraps its galleries and storage in a porous white exoskeleton described by the architects as the ‘veil’. Visitors enter beneath this surface and move through a long escalator into column-light upper galleries, while the central collection storage volume—the ‘vault’—remains visible as a solid presence within the circulation. Opened in 2015 opposite Walt Disney Concert Hall, the museum creates a deliberate contrast between a regular urban box and an irregularly perforated envelope shaped by light, structure and views.
